Phonics for Reading: A Primer

Lakemere Publishing

An easy-to-use reading program consecutively arranged for preschool, kindergarten, and first grade students. It is designed to help prevent reading problems by starting students with reading and laying the groundwork for spelling. The Primer contains material specifically designed for the beginner. This product includes a coupon for a $15.00 discount on Phonics for Reading and Spelling (for later years.)

Preschool
The preschool years should be a time of discovery. In reading, this is when most young children make the connection that those funny marks on the paper mean something to others, and they can tell me what those funny marks say. We do not advocate pushing preschoolers to be reading by a certain time, but there are children who are curious and want to know more about letters. The preschool portion has games and activities that are fun and satisfy that curiosity in a way that is consistent with what they will be taught later. We also provide suggestions for how to write the letters in playful ways and places!

Kindergarten and First Grade
Kindergarten and First Grade begin by learning the connection between the written phonograms (letters and combinations of letters) and the sounds they make. They are introduced to specific letter formations to prevent and correct tendencies toward letter confusions and reversals.  Using fun shapes that the children readily recognize, students begin their handwriting development with good habits that lead to excellent penmanship.  (This is  a one-stroke style not "ball and stick" that promotes good penmanship). Lessons are presented in a scripted dialogue to model clear instruction. It always allows the teacher to proceed at the student’s pace. When the student is ready, phonograms are put together into words, and Spelling Rules are introduced to explain why a word is the way it is. The words are based on frequency so that the first hundred words learned make up 40-50% of all written English material: they are vital for reading. Reference Charts are provided to reinforce what is being taught.
